Professors, be forewarned: A crown or tiara �€not books �€will be on the minds of 10 West VirginiaUniversity seniors who will reign over this years Homecoming activities Oct. 13-19. 


The five men and five women on the 2002 Homecoming court will engage in some friendly competition during the week, campaigning for the titles of king and queen. WVU officials will announce the royal winners during halftime of the WVU -Syracuse game, which begins at noon Saturday, Oct. 19, at Mountaineer Field.


 


The 2002 Homecoming queen candidates are:                 


  • Annelee Boyle, a biology and Spanish major from Morgantown. She is sponsored by Pi Beta Phi and is the daughter of Dr. Edward and Renie Boyle.

  • Christina Ann Grisso, an industrial engineering major from Bridgeport. She is sponsored by Alphi Pi Mu industrial engineering honorary and is the daughter of David and Jan Grisso.

  • Miki Marcia Kirelawich, an industrial engineering major from Morgantown. She is representing the Institute of Industrial Engineers and is the daughter of William and Margaret (Maggie) Kirelawich.

  • Stephanie Morris, a secondary education major from Morgantown. She is representing the Student Education Association and is the daughter of Jim and Debi Morris.

  • Angela Piccirillo, a broadcast news major from Madison. She represents Alpha Xi Delta and is the daughter of Charles and Melinda Piccirillo.


Finalists for king are:                  


  • Paul H. Green Jr., a Spanish and economics major from Cumberland, Md. He is sponsored by Sigma Chi Fraternity and is the son of Paul H. and Victoria Green.

  • Nick James, a political science major from Nichols, N.Y. He is representing Pi Kappa Phi and is the son of Bob and Betsy James.

  • Jared W. H. Nichols, a history major from Staten Island, N.Y. He is sponsored by Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and WVU Army ROTC and is the son of the Rev. Willard G. Nichols and Janice E. Holleny.

  • Richard Tyre, a geology major from Elkins. He is sponsored by Kappa Kappa Psi and is the son of Edward and Barbara Tyre.

  • P. Tim Valentine, a music education major from Charleston. He is representing Gamma Beta Phi Society and is the son of Rosemary Valentine.


The court will be introduced during the”Rockinon the Riverfront”charity concert, which kicks off Homecoming Week at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the HazelRubyMcQuainRiverfrontPark. The Argument will perform, and proceeds from the $5 concert will benefit the United Way of Monongalia and Preston counties.


Homecoming king and queen candidates will wrap up their campaigning Monday, Oct. 14, with forums at noon in the Mountainlair and at 9 p.m. in the Evansdale Residential Complex Gold Room. Elections will be Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the ERC and Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the Mountainlair; hours are from 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. both days.


Other Homecoming Week activities include games Tuesday and Wednesday on the MountainlairPlaza, a blood drive from noon-6 p.m. Wednesday at WesleyUnitedMethodistChurch and the Homecoming parade at 6:30 p.m. Friday on High Street.


 


Biographies:


Christina Grisso


A senior industrial engineering major, Christina Grisso is from Bridgeport, WV and is the daughter of David and Jan Grisso. Christina is a member of several student organizations including the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, Golden Key International Honour Society, and Phi Kappa Phi. She was also a member of the WVU Varsity Cheerleading Squad from 1999-2002. While serving the University, Christina has been the volunteer coordinator and secretary for the WVU Foundation Board of Managers and the Chairman for the Mountaineer Week Craft Fair. As a 4.0 student, Christina has won numerous awards including WVU Industrial Engineering Student of the Year for 2001 and 2002, College of Engineering Human Factors Award, Sons of Italy National Leadership Grant Award, A.O. Putnam Memorial National Award and the Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Freshman award. Christina is also involved in the local community. She has participated in activities that benefit Cardiac Care and the American Heart Association, visited with terminally ill patients at WVU Childrens Hospital, and has helped local Girl Scout troops earn badges in engineering and mathematics. She is sponsored by Alphi Pi Mu, which is the Industrial Engineering Honorary.


 


Miki Kirelawich


A native of Morgantown, Miki Kirelawich is the daughter of William and Margaret Kirelawich and a senior industrial engineering major. An active student, Miki serves as the Vice President of External Affairs of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, treasurer of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society. She has been honored the Outstanding Sophomore and Junior in Industrial Engineering. Miki has also been involved in peer mentoring, the Salvation Army and the Ronald McDonald House. She is sponsored by the Institute of Industrial Engineers.


Angela Piccirillo


Angela Piccirillo is a senior broadcast news major from Madison, WV and is the daughter of Charles and Melinda Piccirillo. Involved in her sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, Angela has served as the new members chair and as the philanthropy chair during which her sorority received best philanthropy on campus. She has also served as the Vice President of Public Relations for Panhellenic Council. Angela has been honored academically by her induction into the journalism honorary, Kappa Tau Alpha. Because of interest in community service, Angela participated in projects at the Shack, the Kaleidoscope program and a Halloween project for Cass Elementary. Angela has also been involved in the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism Cancer Project. She is sponsored by Alpha Xi Delta.


 


Stephanie Morris


A senior secondary education major from Morgantown, Stephanie Morris is the daughter of Jim and Debi Morris. She is a member of the Student Education Association. Stephanie has also been involved in the WVU International Fair and the WVU Foreign Fest. With an interest in choreography, Stephanie has volunteered her time to direct and choreograph the Morgantown High School Junior Orchesis Dance Honorary and the 2002 Monogalia County Fair Queen and Little Mister pageants. She has volunteered for the Woodburn Elementary School Summer Reading Program and as a tutor at MorgantownHigh School. Stephanie was also the 2000 MissMonogaliaCounty. She is sponsored by the Student Education Association.


Annelee Boyle


Annelee Boyle is a senior biology and Spanish major from Morgantown and is the daughter of Dr. Edward and Renie Boyle. She has been involved in numerous student organizations including the Debate Team, the biology honorary, the Spanish honorary and the biochemical honorary. A member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, Annelee serves the Vice President of Mental Advancement.


With a 3.95 GPA , she have been recognized a winner of the Brouzas Award, which is the highest award given to a student in the Department of Foreign Language, as an Eberly Scholar and has been inducted into Phi Kappa Phi. Annelee has also volunteered at Morgantown HealthRight and received a research fellowship at the MaryBabbRandolphCancerCenter. She is sponsored by Pi Beta Phi.


Homecoming King Candidates:  


Jared Nichols


Nichols is a senior history major from Staten Island, NY and is the son of the Rev. Willard G. Nichols and Janice E. Holleny. A member of the WVU Army ROTC program, Jared has been a member of the Army ROTC s color guard and ranger team. Through his involvement in this program, Jared has received numerous awards including the American Legion Military Excellence Medal, Army ROTC Freshman of the Year Award in 2000 and the Distinguished Cadet Award for 2000-2002. He is also involved in the Military Order of the Scabbard&Blade. As an active member in his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, Jared serves on the Inter-Fraternity Council and was honored as the 2001-2002 Greek Man of the Year. In an effort to give back to his community, Jared has been involved with Project Hospitality, which helps to feed the homeless in New York and also helped to organize Mario Lemieux Cancer Research Foundation in the Morgantown Area. He is sponsored by Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and WVU Army ROTC .


Paul H. Green, Jr.


From Cumberland, MD, Paul H.”P.J.”Green, Jr. is the son of Paul H. and Victoria Green and is a Spanish and economics major. An active student, P.J. has been involved in the College Republicans, the Orchesis Dance Ensemble and a member of the WVU Cheerleading Squad. Last year, as a member of the Basics Open Squad, P.J. and his squad won the national cheerleading championship. He has also been honored with the WVU Athletic Directors Academic Achievement Award. P.J. is a member of the American Red Cross and the Multiple Schlorosis Society. Taking an active interest in children, P.J. has been a cheerleading coach for Basic All-Stars and a basketball official. He is sponsored by Sigma Chi Fraternity.


Richard Tyre


A senior geology major from Elkins, WV, Richard Tyre is the son of Edward and Barbara Tyre. He has been involved in several activities at the University including the Mountaineer Maniacs, Delta Chi Fraternity, the 2001 Homecoming Committee and a Monticola Yearbook contributor. Richard is also a member of the WVU Mountaineer Marching Band. As a member of the College Republicans, he was elected to hold as the states corresponding secretary. With an interest in his community, Richard has volunteered at KaleidoscopeCommunityLearningCenter, Scotts Run Settlement and as a staff member at the American Legion Mountaineer BoysState. He is sponsored by Kappa Kappa Psi.


Nick James


Nick James is a senior political science major from Nichols, NY and is the son of Bob and Betsy James. An active member of his fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi, Nick as served as the chapters president and Push America Committee Chairman. Through his fraternity, he was chosen for the Jack M. Casper Leadership Society, which nationally selects seven members who have shown superior leadership abilities. He also is the President of the Inter-Fraternity Council. Nick has served as a student representative for the WVU Athletic Council. As a volunteer for the Tioga County Rural Economic Area Partnership, Nick worked as a grant writer for economically challenged communities. He is sponsored by Pi Kappa Phi.


Tim Valentine


A senior music education major from Charleston, WV, Tim Valentine is the son of Rosemary Valentine. Active in many student organizations, he is the state and local president of the Gamma Beta Phi Society and will be the host of the organizations regional conference this fall. Also through Gamma Beta Phi, Tim is leading his members to raise money and toys for the St. Jude Childrens ResearchHospital in a project called”U-Haul for Life.”He is also a member of the University Honors Program, Golden Key International Honour Society and the Student Alumni Association. Tim is a rank leader in the WVU Mountaineer Marching Band, a member of the University choir and a vocalist in Same Difference, a vocal jazz ensemble. He also has worked for two years as a student assistant for New Student Orientation. He is sponsored by the Gamma Beta Phi Society.
