A disagreement occurs, words are exchanged, tempers flare, an argument ensues, push comes to shove, and blows are exchanged. Sounds like a minor fist fight, doesnt it? There is nothing minor about a fist fight, said Lt. Randy Friend of the West Virginia University Department of Public Safety.

Fistfighting is a violent act committed by persons who arent in control of their anger or their emotion, and who react in an uncivilized, uncontrolled violent manner, Friend said. A fist fight can lead to bodily injury, and in some cases death, he added.

Criminal charges, jail time, fines, court cost, attorney fees and civil lawsuits often result from fistfights.

Fistfighting is defined by West Virginia State Law as battery, and is punishable by up to one year in jail and up to a $500 fine.

Students may also face disciplinary action ranging from suspension to expulsion.”Think before you act,”Friend urges.”A simple argument and a minor fistfight might just change your life forever,”he said.
