West Virginia University will celebrate Diversity Week Oct. 13-18,”The Values that Unite,”with interesting guest speakers, a fund-raising concert in support of United Way, films and the annual Women of Color Day luncheon.


The activities get under way at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, with a special United Way Benefit Concert “Rockinon the Riverfront” featuring popular local band”The Argument”at Ruby McQuain Amphitheater on the Riverfront. Tickets are $5 each and available at the concert; proceeds will benefit the United Way of Monongalia and Preston counties. Tickets can also be purchased at a student United Way campaign booth weekdays in the Mountainlair from 9 a.m. �€4 p.m. through Oct. 11 and in the Mountainlair Student Organization Wing or in Room 206 Elizabeth Moore Hall.
On Monday, Oct. 14, a cake cutting ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. in Woodburn Circle, Downtown Campus, and at 11:45 a.m. in the Mountainlair Commons.


Guest speaker Debra Schultz, author of Going South: Jewish Women in the Civil Rights Movement, and Faith Holsaert, one of the women featured in the book, will be at the Mountainlair Gold Ballroom for a 7:30 p.m. talk on Monday, Oct. 14. A book signing will follow.


An Evansdale Campus Diversity Week Celebration will be held at Engineering Circle from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. Free food and entertainment will be provided.


A Benedum lecture featuring Dr. Shibley Telhami from the University of Maryland will focus on”The Stakes: America, the War on Terrorism and the Middle East”at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in G24 Eiesland Hall.


Telhami served as advisor to the United States delegation to the United Nations during the Iraq-Kuwait crisis, and was a staff member to Cong. Lee Hamilton. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has a weekly radio commentary that is broadcast throughout the Middle East.


This years Women of Color Day Luncheon will revolve around the theme,”The Spirituality of the Plains Indian Women,”at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. Thomasine R. Troisi, a Crow and Pawnee Indian from St. Marys, will give the keynote address.


A silent auction will be held throughout the week at various events and continue on Thursday and Friday in the Mountainlair Ballrooms starting at 7 p.m. Several items up for grabs include WVU football tickets and a WVU parking permit.


The WVU Percussion Ensemble also will be on hand to perform in the Mountainlair Ballrooms on both Thursday and Friday evenings at 8 pm. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for WVU faculty and staff and $8 for WVU students.
