Dean Young, the 2002 Virginia Butts Sturm writer-in-residence in the West Virginia University Department of English, will give a public reading at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in the Mountainlair Gold Ballroom.
Young is the author of five books of poems, most recently”Skid”and”First Course in Turbulence,”both from the University of Pittsburgh Press. He has received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a fellowship from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and a Stegner Fellowship from StanfordUniversity. He teaches at the Iowa WritersWorkshop.
The Sturm residency was established in 1986 by Albert Lee and Virginia Butts Sturm to support a visiting writer on the WVU campus for one week to give a public reading and meet nightly with a group of students selected for the workshop.
“The Sturm Residency is a rare and wonderful opportunity for WVU students,”said James Harms, coordinator of the creative writing program in the Department of English.”To work closely with a writer of Dean Youngs caliber will enable these students to bring a fresh and new perspective to their work.”
A reception and book-signing will follow the reading.
