West Virginia University at Parkersburg is planning a week of activities in reflection of Sept. 11, 2001.
“We want to provide our campus with the opportunity to reflect on the tragedy collectively as a community,” WVU Parkersburg President Erik Bitterbaum said.
The week-long Reflections program will begin Sept. 9 with a free lecture on”Trans-Atlantic Response to Terrorism,”presented at 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Ian Davis, director of the British American Security Information Council, will be the featured speaker. Davis has published widely on British defense and foreign policy, European security, the international arms trade, arms export controls, small arms and light weapons and defense diversification. He received both his bachelors and doctorate in peace studies from the University of Bradford.
The lecture is open to the public and will be held in Room 2536-38. The colleges Social Justice Committee is sponsoring the presentation.
A memorial wall listing the Sept. 11th victims will be located in the main campus hallway, beginning Sept. 9th and throughout the week. The colleges Multi-Cultural Awareness Coalition in partnership with the Student Government Association is coordinating the display.
A virtual memorial wall is available atwww.wvup.edu/reflectionsfor web site visitors to express and post their comments regarding the tragedy.
Members of the colleges Staff Council will provide 9/11 memorial ribbons to the campus community throughout the week.
On Sept. 11, student representatives will ring the main hallway campus bell beginning at 8:45 a.m. in memoriam of the 9/11 victims and at the subsequent times when each plane crashed. Participating will be students Christina Fowler, Angel Smith, Destiny McCarthy and Mike Howerton.
A 12 :30 p.m. program on Sept. 11 for the campus community will include faculty, staff and student representatives offering reflections with comments by President Bitterbaum and music by the College Chorale, under the direction of H.G. Young III . It will be held in the college’s multi-purpose room.
Following the program, Student Government will plant a memorial tree at the north triangle area near the campuslower parking lot.
