The Ware Family Foundation has made a gift to establish four new scholarship endowments for students to attend West Virginia Universitytwo Ware Presidential Scholarships, one each for students from Greenbrier and Monongalia counties, and two Ware Men’s Basketball Scholarships.


The Presidential Scholarships are in recognition of Alfred F. and Dolores �€?Dee�€? Jamison Ware’s heritage. He is from Rupert, Greenbrier County , while she hails from Morgantown . The scholarships are available to graduates of Greenbrier West High School , with first preference going to students from Rupert, and of Morgantown High School . To be eligible students must have a 3.0 grade-point average and show financial need.


The Wares are WVU School of Physical Education graduates. He earned a bachelor of science in physical education in 1950 and a master of arts in speech/communications in 1952. She earned her undergraduate degree in physical education in 1952.


The Wares have supported the University for many years and are members of the Woodburn Circle Society, the WVU Foundation’s most prestigious giving society.


Al Ware has been inducted into the Order of Vandalia and the WVU Academy of Distinguished Alumni. Both are members of the School of Physical Education Hall of Fame.


The couple and the Ware Family Foundation also established the Ware Distinguished Professorship, the first such professorship in the School of Physical Education . Dr. Linda Carson, director of the WV Motor Development Center, serves as the Ware Professor.


Chairman Emeritus of Amherst FiberOptics, Al Ware is a former member of the WVU Foundation’s Building Greatness National Campaign Committee and the WVU Alumni Association’s Board of Directors. Dee Ware chairs the Blaney House Visiting Committee and has been both a leader and benefactor in the development of WVU ’s Stansbury Hall Fitness/Wellness Center. They have served on the School of Physical Education Visiting Committee .


The couple has two grown sons and nine grandchildren and has residences in Nokomis , Fla. ; Franklin , Tenn. ; and Morgantown .


The gift was made to the WVU Foundation, a private non-profit corporation that generates and provides support for West Virginia University .
