Through an innovative project called Project WET , a West Virginia University professor spent his summer flooding teacher and student minds with knowledge of fresh water resources.
James Rye , an associate professor of education theory and practice, recently won the West Virginia Environmental Education Leadership Award for his work in Project WET a program designed to promote the states water resource education.
“Dr. Rye has an exceptional base of knowledge regarding the states water resources,”said Anne Nardi, interim dean of the WVU College of Human Resources and Education.”His work to take this knowledge and make it understandable, applicable and interesting for an audience that includes students and teachers is exemplary.”
Gov. Bob Wise presented Rye and many other statewide award winners with the award in Charleston for their work to make a difference in improving the states environment.
Ryes work has also has been to educate teachers about how water is a precious resource. Project WET trains teachers to become more familiar with the uses of water and develop
activities and curriculums surrounding water resources for their students.
It also helps to develop positive attitudes regarding conserving and protecting fresh water resources.
“Conserving water is critical. We take it for granted and this helps to develop an awareness and respect,”he said.
“And, because of the way the class is structured, the learning will become transparent because the students will no longer feel theyre in class. Theyll be having fun,”Rye said.
The curriculum guide for Project WET doesnt require that teachers have a science background.
“Project WET has a multi-disciplinary approach in not just science but in social studies, health, and most essential language arts,”he said.
Rye has also been involved in other programs such as Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA)a University and community partnership that provides academic enrichment and career orientation to minority and financially disadvantaged secondary students.
