Visitors to the State Fair of West Virginia Aug. 9-17 in Fairlea can get a”taste”of West Virginia University while learning about whats”hot”at the states flagship institution of higher education.
In keeping with the”Look Whats Cookin”theme of this years fair, WVU plans several fun events at the WVU Mountaineer Country tent.
Adults can taste water from around the state and kids can”mine”for chocolate chip cookies at the exhibit sponsored by WVU s National Research Center for Coal and Energy. Visitors to the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalisms booth can have their name in a headline and their photo in a story on a mock newspapers food page.
Young people will enjoy a game that helps them identify trees and tree products at the Appalachian Hardwood Centers display. A WVU Extension agent will demonstrate how to prune fruit trees and hedges.
Fair-goers also will have the chance to discuss health concerns with faculty from the schools of pharmacy, nursing and dentistry.
Great prizes are in store for winners of the ever-popular”Who Wants to Be a Mountaineer Millionaire?”game. This years version has new, more challenging questions about WVU and Mountain State trivia and facts.
The WVU Mountaineer mascot Trey Hinrichs will greet visitors during the fairs final four days. WVU Director of Mens Basketball Operations Bill Lilly and Head Baseball Coach Greg Van Zant will also make special appearances.
A new feature at this years fair is the”WVU FairCam,”which will provide a view of whats going on in the WVU Mountaineer Country tent. To take a look at”Whats Cookin”during the fair, select the”State Fair”link from the WVU Extension Service web site ( http://www.ext.wvu.edu/ ).
WVU President David C. Hardesty and his wife, Mountaineer Parents Club Chairperson Susan Hardesty, will attend the Greenbrier County Mountaineer Parents Club Summer Sendoff and Alumni Get-Together Thursday, Aug. 15, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the State Fair WVU Hospitality tent near the Administration Building.
Representatives from the following WVU colleges, schools, departments, programs and branch campuses will be available to talk with visitors during the fairs nine-day run: AgrAbilty Program, Appalachian Hardwood Center, College of Creative Arts, College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, College of Human Resources and Education, Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences, Extended Learning, Extension Service, Health Sciences Center, Institutional Advancement, National Research Center for Coal and Energy, Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism, Rural Health Partnership and HSTA , Student Affairs, Visitors Resource Center, WVU Institute of Technology and Potomac State College of West Virginia University.
