West Virginia University will welcome incoming freshmen and returning students beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16., when residence halls open on the Evansdale and Downtown Campuses.

“We recommend that students be checked into their residences by 4:30 p.m. that day,”said David Stewart, associate dean of Student Affairs and Residential Education.”This will allow students to meet with their Resident Assistant (RA) to review the weekend schedule and take part in all of the planned activities.”

Dr. Stewart noted that students are not required to move in by 4:30 p.m., so if students are unable to arrive by that time or need additional information about their housing assignment, they can call 304-293-4372, ext.15750.

Students and parents are encouraged to look for student volunteers, or”hotshots,”who will be wearing gold t-shirts and helping with the check-in process.

WVU s Jump Start Academy also begins Friday, Aug. 16, and assists new students in making the transition from high school to the University. Activities will help students become oriented to the campus; meet their Resident Faculty Leader, Residence Hall Coordinators and Resident Assistant; as well as meet new friends.

This year, students will also attend a picnic at the Student Recreation Center. At that time, they can tour the facility and obtain information about WVU s 270 student organizations. Additional highlights include a presentation about campus and personal safety, a blue and gold theme dinner and a presentation by a famous health educator.

New Student Convocation, the official welcome to the University and Morgantown, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Coliseum, preceded by a picnic. All incoming freshmen and transfer students with fewer than 29 credit hours are required to attend as part of the University 101 orientation class. Following Convocation, residence hall students will attend their first floor meeting.

Students can also find assistance from a variety of student services during the annual Student Services Days. Representatives from Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Admissions and Records, Housing Assignments, graduate tuition waivers and other student services offices will be located in the Mountainlair Ballrooms from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16; from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17; and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19the first day of the fall semester. The annual FallFest concert also takes place Monday evening on the Mountainlair Plaza. More details will follow soon.

Students and parents with questions about housing should call 304-293-4372, ext.15750.
