West Virginia University President David C. Hardesty Jr. and his wife, Susan, have been invited to speak at naturalization ceremonies Friday, July 26, at the federal courthouse in Elkins.

Nearly 50 people, born in other countries, officially will become naturalized American citizens during the 11 a.m. ceremony presided over by Senior U.S. District Judge Robert E. Maxwell, Northern District of West Virginia.

“Susan and I both have spoken at past naturalization ceremonies and it is absolutely thrilling to us because we observe firsthand the nature of American citizenship,”said Hardesty.”The diversity of America is one of her great strengths.”

Mrs. Hardesty, founder and chair of the Mountaineer Parents Club, is equally honored to be part of the ceremony.

“David and I admire Judge Maxwell very much, and we look forward to being part of the ceremony over which he presides,”she said.

The Hardestys are excited to return to Elkins. Their daughter, Ashley, was named Maid Sylvia a few years ago at the annual Forest Festival.

The oath of citizenship at the naturalization ceremony will be delivered by Dr. Wally Edgel, clerk of the court, Northern District of West Virginia. Invocation, benediction and remarks will be given by Dr. Richard E. Shearer, president emeritus of Alderson-Broadus College.
