Friends and family members of Peter J. Nelson, 23, of Far Rockaway, N.Y. (Formerly of Jamaica), are planning a memorial service for 3 p.m. Friday, July 12, in the Mountainlair Gold Ballroom.
Nelson, a senior majoring in liberal studies at West Virginia University, drowned Friday evening (July 5) in Big Sandy Creek, near Bull Run, Preston County. He had reportedly been swimming and camping with several other WVU students on a small island about 200 yards from shore.
A family burial is planned for a later date in Jamaica.
There will also be a memorial service tonight (July 8) at 6:30 p.m. at the Medical Center Apartment Building J (Recreation Room) for WVU student drowning victims Ram Chaitanya Pallicala and Madhavi Alapati.
Pallicalla, 21, drowned in Deckers Creek June 29 while trying to save Alapati, 25. Alapati was pulled from the water and resuscitated, but died six days later (July 5) at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Both were from India and in the U.S. pursuing graduate degrees in electrical engineering.
Campus Life officials said a bell-ringing service organized by Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity will likely take place after students return for the fall semester to honor the lives of all students lost this summer.
