Larry Hornak of West Virginia Universitys Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering will present”What is Biometrics?”at 1 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the NRCCE Assembly Hall on the Evansdale Campus.

Dr. Hornak is director of the NSF Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR), located at WVU , and engaged in research on integrated biometric sensors and systems.

This seminar, intended for a general audience, will present for discussion the current definition and research under the name”biometrics.”

Biometric research covers a multitude of disciplines, including natural sciences, engineering, social science, political science and business and economics. The seminar will focus on the use of biometrics for automated human identification systems.

Recent events triggering the”War on Terrorism”have stimulated enormous interest in biometrics, and there are growing requirements for increased research in these areas. According to University officials, WVU is assuming national leadership in developing a research agenda.

This seminar is the first in a series of presentations, which will include lectures from distinguished visitors intended to stimulate a broad knowledge of, and interest in, biometric research by WVU faculty and staff.
