The WVU Office of Service Learning Programs (OSLP) recently honored Mon Valley Green Space Coalition, Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism adjunct professor Mary Furbee, and 21 WVU students for their community service and service learning efforts.

WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. addressed the award recipients and presented each with awards. OSLP provides honorees with $200 to pursue their service learning and community service interests along with a plaque.

The Mon Valley Green Space Coalition (MVGSC) received the Outstanding Service Learning Community Activity award. Ella Belling, executive director, is involved with WVU Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Resources course 263. WVU students enrolled in the course plan the Spring Summit, an environmental art and poetry program created to promote watershed awareness, literacy and the arts.

Mary Rodd Furbee won the award for Outstanding Service Learning Course. In Furbees Journalism 318 Community Journalism Partnership course, WVU students produce The Compass and the Mon Valley Voice, two student- and community-produced newspapers.

Twenty-one WVU students were honored for earning presidential service awards for 100 hours or more of community service. The are:

  • Rafael Acosta, a senior physical education major from Rochester, N.Y.
  • William Aucremanne, a sophomore computer engineering major from Bridgeport
  • Amanda Batton, a graduate student in social work from Richmond, Va.
  • Angela Casteel, a junior psychology major from Cowen
  • Carrie Edwards, a graduate student in elementary education from St. Albans
  • Brooke Felton, a junior social work major from Morgantown
  • Chris Ferro, a senior psychology major from McMechen
  • Emily Gibbs, a junior forensics major from Rainbow Lake, N.Y.
  • Brandi Goss, a sophomore nursing major from Yeagertown, Pa.
  • Nancy Heether, a graduate student in human resources and education from Grafton
  • Melinda Hooton, a medical professional from Kingwood
  • Sehkar Mamidi, a pharmacy professional from Chapmanville
  • Jeffrey Marcum, a senior English major from Morgantown
  • Stella Moats, a pharmacy professional from Westover
  • Ashley Moore, a freshmen general studies major from Morgantown
  • Suzanne Moses, a senior industrial engineering major from Morgantown
  • John Stafford Rogers, a junior finance major from Morgantown
  • Miguel Sanchez, an athletic coaching graduate student from Victor, N.Y.
  • Krista Smith, a senior biology major from Auburn, Mich.
  • Chris Williams, a software engineering graduate student from Fairmont
  • Becky Wisnosley a senior biology major from Poway, Calif.

Other organizations who received awards include: Alpha Phi Omega, Lambda Omicron, Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Monongalia Health System, Morgantown Health Right, Morgantown Unity Manor, Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club, Ronald McDonald House and the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties
