An internationally known psychotherapist will discuss stages of change in psychotherapy and ways to tailor treatment strategies to meet client needs at a 1-3:30 p.m. talk and workshop Friday, April 5, in 512 Allen Hall.
John C. Norcross, professor and former chair of the University of Scranton Psychology Department, will discuss Stages of Change in Psychotherapy: Tailoring the Treatment Strategy and Therapy Relationship of the Individual Patient.
“Dr. Norcross is well known worldwide as an authority on behavior change and psychotherapy,”said Jeffrey Messing, chair of the WVU Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling and Counseling Psychology Department in the College of Human Resources and Education.
“The evolution of health care and the science of psychotherapy call for integrative, empirically supported treatments tailored to individual clients,”Dr. Messing said.”Dr. Norcrossworkshop will provide an integrative and efficient framework for customizing treatment methods and the therapy relationship to the patients stage of change.”
Participants will learn to assess a clients stage of change and then”prescriptively”apply processes of change specific to that change, he said.”This practical workshop will feature focused lectures, clinical examples, experiential exercises, interactive discussions and participantsown case material.”
Norcross has written more than 150 scholarly publications and has co-written and edited 12 books including Psychotherapy Relationships that Work, The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health, Changing for Good and The Handbook of Psychotherapy, among others.
He is the past president of the American Psychological Associations Division of Psychotherapy, co-developer of the APA s Psychotherapy Videotape Series, editor of In Session: Journal of Clinical Psychology and has served on the editorial boards of a dozen journals. Dr. Norcross also has served as a clinical and research consultant to a number of organizations.
