WVU students will know how to play it safe both on- and off-campus when the West Virginia University Student Government Association (SGA) sponsors Safety Week March 11-15.
Only in its second year, Safety Week activities feature informational booths daily in the Mountainlair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and guest speakers, including Scott Hayfield, a peer educator from the Health Sciences Center. Representatives from the Off-Campus Housing Office and Students Teaching Others Prevention (STOP) program also will speak.
Among the units with informational displays will be the WVU Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the WVU School of Pharmacy with warnings about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
“Education is the best key to preventing the mishaps that happen on campus,”said Christie Shaffer, Student Government Association safety chairman.”We can have several blue-light phones around campus, but if students dont know how to use them, then it doesnt do any good.”
On Thursday, WVU s DPS will conduct a dorm lock-up by closing all opened dorm room doors. Students locked out will be able to ask their Resident Assistant to let them back in.
“This will be a good way to remind students to be safe and to lock their doors,”Shaffer said.
According to Shaffer, City of Morgantown officials signed a proclamation on March 5 declaring March 11-15 Morgantown Safety Week.
