A new, interactive web site that identifies 750 privately funded scholarships available to present and perspective West Virginia University students has been developed by the WVU Foundation in consultation with the WVU Office of Financial Aid.
p. The site describes each scholarship, lists its eligibility requirements and allows students to apply online. The Foundation manages the scholarship funds and donors establish the eligibility requirements when the scholarship is created.

During Fiscal Year 2001, the Foundation disbursed on behalf of the University $6.8 million, which was directed towards student scholarship support.

“Many high school students must have some type of financial support to be able to attend college. This is particularly true in West Virginia, which has one of the nations lowest rates of students entering college following high school graduation. Privately funded scholarships are a significant source of aid for students to continue their formal education beyond high school. The Foundations web page gives current and potential WVU students and their parents access to this additional means of financial support,”said F. Duke Perry, Foundation president.

The web page also allows students and their parents to actively participate in the screening process. They not only can obtain descriptions and eligibility requirements, but also can electronically search through the 750 scholarship funds based on criteria they have entered.

The site also recognizes donors and gives a history of the scholarship including information on the donor or individual for whom the scholarship has been named.

The site can be accessed three ways:

  • from the main West Virginia University web site atwww.wvu.edu

The site will be updated monthly.

The web site was launched in conjunction with WVU s Financial Aid Awareness Month.

The WVU Foundation is a private non-profit corporation that generates, receives and administers private gifts from individuals and organizations for the benefit of West Virginia University. It is in the fourth year of its five-year $250 million Building Greatness Campaign.
