An intercollegiate rock-climbing contest and 18-event intramural competition are among several events planned this semester at West Virginia Universitys Student Recreation Center.

“The events we have scheduled will both showcase and enhance the many recreational activities available at the Student Recreation Center,”said Sherri Restauri, program manager.

Several activities and competitions are scheduled through February at the Recreation Centers pool. They include a Swim-to-the-Beach competition for students and a Swim-for-Parking for faculty and staff. Swimmers can come in every day during the month and log in their lengths. A length is one trip up the pool, and the person who logs in the most lengths in excess of 750 wins. Prizes are a $250 travel gift certificate for Swim-to-the-Beach winners and a free, one-year WVU parking pass for Swim-for-Parking winners.

The climbing wallthe focal point of the Rec Centerwill be the site of the Intercollegiate Bouldering Competition Saturday, Feb. 16. Several regional colleges are being invited to compete, including Fairmont State College, Slippery Rock University, Frostburg University and Davis&Elkins College. Participants will scale the bottom of the wall with no harness, following the pattern set for them. The wall will be closed a few days in advance so the pattern can be changed, and no one can practice on it before the competition.

The Campus Cup will be held Feb. 11-March 17. Co-rec teams of 10 will compete in 18 different events, including three-on-three basketball, racquetball, a mystery event and a bonus activity. Two eventsthe flag design contest and the team T-shirt competitionwill involve whole teams; other events will require only a few members of each team. Teams whose members wear their team T-shirt at competitions will be awarded bonus points. The winning team will be awarded $1,000 in gift certificates and a trophy engraved with its name.

Campus Cup team rosters are due in the Rec Centers administration office by Wednesday, Feb. 6, Restauri said. The entry fee is $20 per team, and a forfeit fee form needs to be completed and signed by team captains.

The University hopes to make the Campus Cup an annual event, Restauri added.
