Harlan R. Janes, a retired vice president of the A.C. Nielsen Co., will speak on Global Marketing and Management at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in Room 458 of the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics building.

Janes, who received his Regents Bachelors of Arts degree from WVU in 2001, will share his perspective on international marketing and management and discuss his expectations of global customers. He will be on the WVU campus to accept an Alumni Recognition Award from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

Janes, a graduate of Shinnston High School, first attended WVU in 1959. By 1963, he had completed 103 credit hours in various majors when he decided to join A.C. Nielsen, the worlds leader in market research, information and analysis. He stayed with the companybest known for compiling television ratingsuntil his retirement in 1999 as vice president of global marketing and retail measurement services.

From 1974 to 1999, Janes served in nine different senior management positions with the company. By the early 1970s, he had invented and commercialized the measurement of”sales per million”market research measure and helped foster the transition from manual to scanner data collection. He also re-engineered the way clients received technical support, helped the firm expand to more than 25 countries and trained business leaders worldwide how to assess customer satisfaction. He devoted his last years to identifying the best practices for global account management.

Janes recently established a scholarship through WVU for state residents.
