West Virginia University has several experts available to comment on the U.S. military response against Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They include:

  • William Arnett, associate professor of history, 304-293-242. Professor Arnett is well-versed on the Middle East and the impact military strikes against Afghanistan might have on the region.
  • Joe D. Hagan, professor of political science and director of WVU s International Studies Program, 304-293-3811, ext. 5283. Dr. Hagan teaches and conducts research on international relations, U.S. foreign policy and comparative foreign policy. He is the author of”Political Opposition and Foreign Policy in Comparative Perspective.”He has also written several articles on foreign policy and international relations.
  • Dr. Rusty Russell, director of WVU s Virtual Medical Campus, 304-293-5998. The objective of the Virtual Medical Campus is to prepare doctors and emergency personnel to respond to terrorist attacks on American soil. The Virtual Medical Campus is the computer network and national information delivery arm of the National Training Center for Homeland Security (NTC-HLS) that WVU and the West Virginia National Guard are developing together. With Tom Ridge being sworn in today as the director of the newly-formed office of Homeland Security, this would be a good local tie.
  • Tom Sloane, associate dean of Student Life, 304-293-5611. Tom can address questions regarding the Universitys procedures and support for students called up to active military duty.
