This weeks Diversity Week activities (Oct. 8-12) at West Virginia University should provide excellent material for print and broadcast media.
Highlights include a military appreciation breakfast from 7:30-9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct.9, in the Mountainlair ballrooms. Lt. Gen. Robert H.”Doc”Foglesong, a WVU graduate and high ranking U.S. Air Force official, will address the Sept. 11 terrorist attacksjust steps from his Pentagon officeand the American military response.
Foglesong is deputy chief of staff for air and space operations and responsible to the secretary of the Air Force and chief of staff for formulating policy supporting air, space, intelligence, nuclear, counter-proliferation, weather and information operations.
Also on Tuesday, producer-actor Henry Holden will bring his message of including disabled performers in all forms of entertainment media to the Mountainlairs Blue Ballroom at 7 p.m.
African American/Appalachian storyteller and performer Ilene Evans will keynote the Women of Color Day luncheon from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday in the Mountainlair ballrooms.
A live two-hour taping of the internationally acclaimed Mountain Stage will round out the weeks events Friday when the Charleston-based show comes to the Creative Arts Centers Concert Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Larry Groce and the Mountain Stage Band, will host an evening of Appalachian music featuring Hazel Dickens, Johnny Staats, Gandydancer, Scott Miller and Danny Barnes and Thee Old Codgers. The show is produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
The week kicks off today (Monday) with a cake-cutting in the Mountainlair food court at 11:40 a.m., featuring a special appearance by the Highland Dancers, a middle school Celtic dance group from Elkins. Tonights American Indian Dance Concert at the Creative Arts Center begins at 7:30 p.m.
