There will be a whole lot of shakin’goin’on at the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, as alumni, students, faculty and staff bring back the 1950s,60s and70s with a sock hop to celebrate the college’s 50th anniversary.

“During our week of celebration we are having research seminars, a talk by former Gov. Gaston Caperton, a job fair and inductions into the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame,”said B&E Dean Jay Coats.”But the sock hop is purely for fun. It’s an opportunity for our alumni to visit and enjoy the celebration with our students, faculty and staff.”

To create a historical mood, autos from the 1950s and60s will be parked in front of the B&E building, located next to Woodburn Circle, where the old football stadium used to stand. Alumni and students will be able to have their photos taken in period costumes with the cars. Inside the building, there will be a malt shop and diner, with real 1950s food and milkshakes, and the B&E Bijou showing highlights of movies from that era.

Dancing to the tunes of the golden age of rockn roll will begin at 6 p.m. interrupted only for a hula-hoop and limbo dancing contest, with prizes for contestants.

“We hope that our alumni will stop in, either to dance, eat, watch or just to visit,”Coats said.”We won’t have another event like this for 50 years.”
