Those who work daily to solve the states social and economic problems can find new ways to solve them while attending the”Creating Our Future Together: Leadership for Nurturing Family and Community in the New West Virginia”conference Oct. 8-9 at the Days Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Flatwoods.
The event, sponsored by West Virginia Universitys Beatrice Ruth Burgess Center for West Virginia Families and Communities, the WVU School of Applied Social Sciences of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and the WVU Extension Service, is bringing together the states leading academic, economic development and social services faculty to help field professionals find ways to improve the everyday lives of West Virginia residents.
Keynote speakers and their topics include: Dr. Bob Wineburg, Jefferson-Pilot Excellence Professor in Social Work, University of North Carolina-Greensboro,”Faith-Based Initiatives: Creating New Partnerships for Service;”Becky Cain, president and CEO of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation,”Community Physicals: Social Capital Indicators for Community Development;”Dr. Larry Cote, WVU associate provost for Extension and Public Service,”Leadership for Building Social Capital and Community Capacity: What Works?”and Dr. Roger Lohmann, professor of social work, WVU School of Applied Social Sciences,”Beyond Trust: Another Dimension of Social Capital.”
The two-day event also features 30 workshops led by WVU faculty and experienced professionals from around the state. Workshop themes include non-profit leadership and management, faith-based initiatives, services for at-risk families and community development.
Participants can receive Continuing Education Units as well as credits for social work licensure.
Registration fee for the two-day conference is $95; one-day attendance is $60. Luncheon fee for either day is $15. Early registration for any or all of the conference is due by Friday, Sept. 21.
