Daniel Flynn and Jana Matish took top individual honors at West Virginia Universitys annual Greek Awards banquet held at the end of the spring 2001 semester.

Flynn, a senior economics major from Manalapan, N.J., was named Outstanding Man of the Year for 2000-2001. He was cited for his leadership and community service as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Flynn served last year as Sigma Phi Epsilons social chairperson and vice president of communications and was elected to serve as president for the 2001-2002 academic year. He also received the Eugene Rusty Walker Award for outstanding service to the fraternity. In addition to volunteering with Special Olympics, Flynn led his fraternitys philanthropy which raised more than $500 for the Morgantown Fire Department. He attended the Sigma Phi Epsilon Carlton Leadership Academy in Richmond, Va., and will represent WVU at the centennial SigEp Grand Chapter Conclave in Washington, D.C. next week (Aug. 15-19).

Matish, a senior marketing major from Bridgeport, earned Outstanding Woman of the Year 2000-2001 honors. She is a member of Chi Omega, and some of her primary accomplishments included serving as president of her sorority, vice-president of judicial affairs for Panhellenic, and as a representative on the Chi Omega National Collegiate Advisory Board for the National Executive Board. She also served on the Board of Managers and participated in numerous Chi Omega service projects, such volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House.

Alpha Xi Delta and Chi Omega sororities won the Betty Miller Outstanding Sorority award, the highest honor for WVU sororities. Alpha Xi Delta ranked second in Academic Excellence and garnered awards for Leadership, Philanthropy and Community Service. Alpha Xi Delta was recognized for having members in leadership positions in various campus organizations, including student body vice-president and two members on the student government Board of Governors. Some of the sororitys major community service projects of the year were raising money for their philanthropy, Choose Children, which supports The Shack, a childrens after-school program, and collecting items for canned food, clothing and book drives.

During the 2000-2001 academic year, Chi Omega earned the Panhellenic Award and a Special Achievement Award for completing a team-building ropes course in the Ligonier Camp and Conference Centers Adventure Program. Their community service efforts included weekly visits to residents of the Madison House, working twice with Habitat for Humanity, fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House and cooking a special dinner for families staying at the local Ronald McDonald House.

Kappa Alpha Order earned the Joe Gluck Outstanding Fraternity award, the highest honor for WVU fraternities. Kappa Alpha won the annual Mountaineeer Week, Greek Week and homecoming competitions during 2000-2001 and were recognized with outstanding chapter development and outstanding chapter leadership awards. Their community service included helping with Duluth County flood relief, stocking stuffers for the Salvation Army, participating in street clean-ups and holding a karaoke fundraiser for their philanthropy, the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
