West Virginia Universitys student-centered approach to learning and instruction will be applied in a continuing education course offered this fall through distance learning for social workers, mental health service providers and other human service professionals at sites throughout West Virginia.

This course, Psychopathology and Social Work Practice, will be provided by the WVU Division of Social Work through satellite technology in 16 communities statewide.

In addition to receiving presentations on many course-related topics at local community centers, participants will have opportunities to interact with the instructor and their fellow students and use posted Web resources and other supports to tailor the program more specifically to their needs.

Through a special Web site, participants can get supplementary information, readings and assignments as well as communicate directly with the course instructor.

Local facilitators will assist participants as needed in obtaining Internet access and with other course-related concerns.

“These interactive and individualized learning supports make it possible for participants to relate knowledge obtained through the course to problems they encounter in their work,”said Nancy Lohmann, professor and interim chair of the Division of Social Work.

Betsy Randall of the Divisions Charleston Center is instructor for the course. Dr. Randall is an experienced clinical social worker and educator.

The course meets Tuesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 21-Dec. 4. Participants may enroll either for graduate credit (SW 643) or continuing education credit (30 contact hours) at the following sites: Beckley, Elkins, Glenville, Huntington, Institute, Keyser, Lewisburg, Logan, Morgantown, New Martinsville, Nicholas County, Parkersburg, Petersburg, Princeton, Shepherdstown and Wheeling.
