High school students visiting West Virginia University for the West Virginia Governors Honors Academy (GHA) will get a chance to learn math from comic actor Leslie Nielsen. Nielsen, who resides in Scottsdale, Ariz., will be on campus Wednesday, July 11, at 8 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms to present a math program to GHA s 170 participants.

Nielsen, star of the”Naked Gun”and”Airplane!”movies, is a long-time promoter of learning games, most of which were developed by University of Michigan law professor Layman Allen and his company, WFF N Proof Publishers (for more information, seewww.wff-n-proof.com). WFF N Proof games and puzzles focus on fundamental reasoning skills of logic, mathematics, experimental science and dealing with the logical structure of English text. Nielsen claims”you learn faster when youre having fun.”

Students participating in GHA will remain on campus through July 29 for three weeks of intensive study, extracurricular activities, innovative speakers and a trip to Washington, D.C. At least two students from each of West Virginias 55 counties are chosen for GHA . Additional students are selected from a general pool.

WVU and the state Department of Education sponsor GHA , which began in 1984.
