  • Details: Nine teams of students from a Marketing 211 course in the WVU College of Business and Economics (B&E) will present counter- marketing campaigns, which are designed to dissuade college students from smoking. The project judged most effective will be financed for use in future local and state media campaigns.


The projects were done as part of a $21,000 grant and collaboration with the West Virginia University Extension Service, WVU College of Business and Economics Marketing Department, and the University Health Service.


An average of 12 West Virginians die each day because they smoked cigarettes. One in five deaths, or about 4,200 deaths per year, are caused by smoking, according to the West Virginia Healthy People 2000 Midcourse Review, by the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health.
