One West Virginia University official will remain a part of Gov.-elect Bob Wises staff on an interim basis while another will join the administration full-time, Wise announced Thursday (Jan. 4).

David Satterfield, WVU s chief of staff and vice president for Institutional Advancement, who has been heading the governor-elects transition effort since mid-November, will serve as interim chief of staff effective Jan. 15 and extending at least through the legislative session.

The extension of the intergovernmental loan was approved by WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. at the request of the governor-elect.

Wise said the state will reimburse the University for Satterfields salary during this interim period. He is expected to return to his university post in late April or early May.

Wise also tapped WVU Health Sciences Center communicator Bill Case as director of communications, also effective Jan. 15.

Case, a graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. and WVU , worked at The Charleston Gazette prior to joining WVU in 1985 as a writer-editor at the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences. He has been manager of the HSC News Service since 1990

Satterfield earned both his undergraduate and masters degrees from WVU in 1980 and 1984, respectively, and joined the music faculty in the College of Creative Arts in 1983. He also served as assistant band director before becoming former WVU President Neil Bucklews special assistant from 1993-1995.

He joined the Hardesty administration in 1995 as chief advisor and head of the new administrations transition team. He was subsequently named chief of staff and vice president for Institutional Advancement, serving as WVU s primary government relations official and overseeing athletics, internal audit and the communications units.

He has been involved in faculty and state higher education issues for many years, serving as chair of WVU s Faculty Senate and heading the Higher Education Advocacy Team (HEAT) under former Gov. Gaston Caperton. That effort resulted in significant legislative reforms and increased investment in West Virginias colleges and universities.

He has since been involved in other higher education reform legislation, Senate Bill 547 and Senate Bill 653.

Satterfields duties at WVU will be absorbed by other members of the presidents staff.
