WVU Student Organization Services plans charitable activities for holidays
West Virginia University Student Organization Services hopes to make the holiday season a little brighter for needy families with three community service programs.
To ensure the success of these programs, Student Organization Services Coordinator Melanie Cook invites the participation of the entire WVU and Morgantown communities.
p. SHOP (Students Helping Other People)
p. Student Organization Services and Student Administration in cooperation with the Salvation Army will sponsor the SHOP program to provide toys and new clothes to local disadvantaged children.
Teaming up with host store Super K-Mart, SHOP hopes to raise $5,000 to fund a shopping trip for approximately 100 needy children on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m.-noon.
Organizations, students, faculty, staff and members of the local community can help by sending financial support by Monday, Dec. 4, to SHOP , Student Organizations Services, Mountainlair, PO Box 6444, Morgantown, WV 26506 -6444, or by volunteering to help at the shopping trip.
p. Toy Mountain
p. The Mountainlair will once again be home to Morgantowns largest mountain of toys on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Last years Toy Mountain project collected about $2,500 worth of toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign. Student organizer Doug Skaff hopes to meet or better that amount this year, thanks to the help of local schools.
“This year students at the local high schools and middle and junior high schools are going to collect toys for Toy Mountain,”Skaff said.
WVU students and local school students will construct the mountain in the Mountainlair Food Court on Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 6-10 p.m. The following morning Wednesday, Dec. 6 the public can add new, unwrapped toys to the mountain. At 1:30 p.m. the toy mountain will be presented to members of the U.S. Marine Corps in a ceremony featuring West Virginia Auditor Glen Gainer, WVU President David C. Hardesty and representatives from the U.S. Marines. The Marine Corps will distribute the toys to needy children throughout West Virginia during the upcoming holiday season.

p. Canned Food Sculpture Competition
p. Members of WVU student organizations will get a chance to display their creativity during the Canned Food Sculpture Competition on Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 7-9 p.m. in the Mountainlairs Vandalia Lounge. Judges will evaluate the sculptures on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. and award prizes of up to $400. All canned food items will be donated to Christian Help Inc. Food Pantry.
