West VirginiaUniversity educators will offer advice on”Making Reading Fun for Your Pre-School Child”as part of WVU s Information Sessions for Parents of Young Children series at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Percival Hall Room 334 (the lower level of Allen Hall) on the Evansdale Campus.

Educators Kaye McCrory, Sylvia Berryhill and Dr. Allison Swan will present ideas that aim to make reading more fun for children of pre-school age.

“Parents and caretakers are the primary tool needed to transfer the information from the book to the child,”said Kaye McCrory, 2nd grade teacher and teacher education coordinator at SuncrestPrimary School in Morgantown.”There are many effective ways to make reading fun and meaningful €so much so, that the preschooler will eventually want to read independently.

Three specific areas will be covered: rhyming books and activities; alphabet/concept books and activities; and color/concept books. Handmade puppets will be displayed by a children’s literature class, and handouts will be given with Web sites, bibliographies and puppet-making ideas.

The presentation will be directed to parents of preschool children and kindergarten children. Parents are encouraged to register before the session.

According to McCrory, adults need to provide language to children through talk and through contact with the environment.”Children will explore how language sounds, what it does and how it can be used,”said McCrory.

Anne Nardi, Interim Dean of the College of Human Resources and Education, is pleased that the Alumni Association is sponsoring a series of information sessions for the parents of young children.

“Each of the presenters is experienced and will be able to provide practical advice for parents as they work with their own young children,”said Nardi.”This presentation on reading is especially important for parents because reading is an essential component in school success.”

The event is sponsored by the College of Human Resources and Education Alumni Association and is free and open to the public.
