Five men and five women will vie for Homecoming King and Queen at West Virginia University Oct. 29-Nov. 4, as students and alumni gear up for annual Homecoming Week activities on campus.

Finalists, announced October 17th include:

King Candidates :

  • Greg Bertino , a general studies major from Pittsford, N.Y. He is the son of Bo and Robyn Bertino and is sponsored by Phi Kappa Psi.
  • Robert Gayda , a history major from Clarksburg, N.J. He is the son of Bob and Barbara Gayda and is sponsored by Pi Kappa Phi.
  • Louis Gentile , a political science major from Steubenville, Ohio. He is the son of Lou and Carmella Gentile and is sponsored by the Young Democrats and the Organization of Italian Americans.
  • Brent Kiger , an industrial engineering major from Fairview. He is the son of Harold and Carolyn Kiger and is sponsored by the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
  • Robert Ross , Jr., a finance major from Bridgeport. He is the son of Robert and Sondra Ross and is sponsored by Delta Sigma Pi.

Queen Candidates:

  • Ashley Bainbridge , an elementary education major from Weirton. She is the daughter of William and Pamela Bainbridge and is sponsored by Alpha Phi.
  • Jennifer Fluharty , a biology major from Salem. She is the daughter of Thomas and Linda Fluharty and is sponsored by Alpha Omicron Pi.
  • Hillary Jeffries , a broadcast news major from Greensboro, Pa. She is the daughter of Christopher and Cynthia Jeffries and is sponsored by the WVU Newman Club.
  • Rebekah Jones , a pharmacy major from Bridgeport. She is the daughter of Terry and Sharon Jones and is sponsored by Pi Beta Phi.
  • Gabrielle St. Leger , a secondary education and English major from Hempstead, N.Y. She is the daughter of Charles and Laetitia St. Leger and is sponsored by Gamma Beta Phi and Zeta Phi Beta.

A”meet the candidates”forum will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, in the Mountainlair Commons, and voting will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 31Nov. 1 at two locationsat the Evansdale Residential Complex on the Evansdale Campus from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and in the Mountainlair Commons from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The homecoming king and queen will be crowned during halftime of the WVU -Syracuse football game which begins at noon Saturday, Nov. 4, at Mountaineer Field.

Activities begin Sunday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. on the Lair Plaza with Campus Survivor, a take-off of the hit television show.

The popular Song and Cheer competition will get under way at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, on the Lair Plaza.

Other events scheduled include a canned food drive on Tuesday from noon-4 p.m. (drop off items at the Student Organization Services conference room), a blood drive on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from noon-6 p.m. in the Blue and Gold Ballrooms and a Mountaineer Maniacs pep rally Thursday at 10 p.m. in the Mountainlair Food Court.

The annual Homecoming Parade down High Street, featuring the homecoming court and soon-to-be-announced outstanding alumni and parade marshal, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3.
