FallFest 2000, West Virginia University’s welcome-back-to-campus extravaganza, kicks off the 2000-2001 academic year on Monday, Aug. 21.

This year’s activities, free to WVU students with a valid WVU Student ID, include a hip-hop dance party/concert, two comedy clubs, a Samuel L. Jackson film festival and FallFest’s signature eventthe Mountainlair plaza concert.

The plaza concert is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. when local favorite Khiaro Scuro takes the stage with their unique combination of introspective lyrics and classic R&B grooves. Next on the bill is the Washington, D.C.-based band Virginia Coalition and their impressive fusion of funk, rock and D.C. go-go styles. The concert will continue when Fuel brings what Rolling Stone calls”breezy melodies with full-out metallic aggression”to the plaza stage. WVU students can then welcome Liveto the stage, where they are sure to be treated to a most-inspiring rendition of the band’s hit”Lightning Crashes.”

FallFest’s Samuel L. Jackson film festival will include showings of”Pulp Fiction,”“A Time to Kill,”“The Negotiator”and”Rules of Engagement.”All films will be shown in the Mountainlair Gluck Theatre.

Nationally touring comedians will appear for two FallFest 2000 comedy clubs with shows at 10 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. in Mountainlair Hatfields. Beginning at 11 p.m., D.J. Spooky will host a hip-hop dance party/concert in the Mountainlair Ballrooms that will feature a performance by the rap quartet Lost Boyz.

Legal beverages will be available to students 21 and older. Alternative beverages and food will also be available. The PRT and University buses will run until 2 a.m. No coolers, hard containers or laser pointers will be permitted on the plaza.

A number of parking restrictions will be enforced on Monday, Aug. 21. Parking will be prohibited on West Prospect Street between University Avenue and North High Street. Parking will also be prohibited on North High Street between West Prospect and Fife streets. Both traffic and parking will be prohibited on Maiden Lane beginning at 5 p.m. Only north-bound traffic will be permitted on North High Street after 5 p.m.
