Elkins High School graduate Stephanie Jo George of Coalton has been named West Virginia Universitys 2000-2001 Lyon Scholar. Chosen by WVUs Housing and Residence Life staff and the Lyon Scholarship Committee, George will receive full room and board, valued at $5,152, during her freshman year.

The Harriet E. Lyon Scholarship honors WVUs first woman graduate, and the award recipient must reside in Lyon Tower on the Evansdale Campus.

“Stephanie seems destined to achieve and to make a positive difference as a Lyon resident and WVU student,”commented Beverly Taylor, assistant director of housing administration.

At Elkins High School, George was a member of the National Honor Society, the Juniorettes, Interact, Key Club, Varsity Club, SCAT , Student Council and Class Council. She also served as team captain of the schools volleyball squad. In addition to her school-related activities, George has volunteered with Special Olympics for the past nine years and has officiated the Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament.

George plans to major in biology at WVU .
