C-SPAN2 will air”On the Frontlines: The Women Who Covered the Vietnam War and Changed Journalism History”at 8 p.m. Friday, April 28as part of the networks coverage of the 25th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.
The panel discussion, held at West Virginia University April 7, featuring seven women war correspondents will also air later that night on C-SPAN.
The women, who covered every aspect of the war from the intense combat in the jungles of Da Nang to the Viet Cong mother who lost her husband and six children spoke about their experiences during recent Journalism Week activities on campus.
The program features Denby Fawcett, who covered the war for the Honolulu Advertiser and now works for ABC ; Tad Bartimus, former Associated Press correspondent and co-founder of The Womens Syndicate; Edith Lederer, veteran foreign correspondent with the Associated Press; Morrissy Merik, formerly of NBC now a freelancer; Tracy Wood, formerly of UPI and now investigations editor with the Orange County Register; Laura Palmer, formerly a radio freelancer reporter for ABC , NBC and Rolling Stone and now an independent producer and author; and Juate Kazickas, formerly with Look magazine now working as a freelancer for various womens magazines.
The discussion was moderated by Martha Teichner, Emmy Award-winning CBS News war correspondent.
Dean of the School of Journalism Christine Martin and Broadcast News Associate Professor Maryanne Reed brought the panelists together with support from the Judith Gold Stitzel Endowment for Excellence in Womens Teaching and Learning and the Freedom Forum.
Both are currently in Vietnam with WVU Visiting Shott Chair George Esper and WVU Kearns Fellow Melinda Young, a student, pursuing their research interests.
