A. Bray Cary Jr., NASCAR vice president of broadcasting and technology, will be the next guest speaker during Journalism Week 2000, continuing April 10-13 on the West Virginia University campus .

Activities kicked off Friday, April 7, with a panel of women war correspondents who covered the Vietnam War.

Cary will speak about his career in the media marketing business at 10 a.m. Monday, April 10, in Room 205 Martin Hall.

A 1970 public relations graduate of the WVU Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism and member of the WVU Board of Advisors, Cary is in charge of overseeing all broadcasting and licensed programs for NASCAR . He is also responsible for new innovations in multimedia and technology to bring NASCAR to more fans.

Since joining the company in 1998, he has helped orchestrate the television deal with NASCAR , Fox, NBC and TBS . He also helped create a deal with XM Satellite Radio, which will begin work on the first all_NASCAR radio station. The station will carry 24_hour coverage of NASCAR races and stories seven days a week.

The Hinton native began his sports marketing career working in collegiate sports for the Sun Belt Conference, where he developed and operated a television network.

In 1984, Cary founded Creative Sports Marketing in Charlotte, N.C., and it quickly became the largest syndicator for college football and basketball during a 10_year rise. ESPN bought the company in 1994.

He received the P.I. Reed Achievement Award from the Journalism Schools Alumni Association in 1999, and is a member of the School’s P.I. Reed Society.

Cary earned a master’s degree in public administration from the WVU Eberly College of Arts and Sciences in 1971.
