The West Virginia University Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism is bringing back to campus the ever popular Journalism Week next month.
The week kicks off with a panel of women war correspondents,”On the Frontlines: The Women Who Covered the Vietnam War and Changed Journalism History,”at 8 p.m. Friday, April 7, at the Health Sciences Center Auditorium.. The panel is co-sponsored by both the School of Journalism and the Center for Women’s Studies in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
Journalism alumni will gather for their annual banquet and meeting at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at The Pines Country Club. Winner of the P. I. Reed Achievement award is Robert M. Rine, retired public relations assistant director for Weirton Steel.
A new award, The Paul A. Atkins Friend of the School Award, will go to G. Ogden Nutting, president and publisher of Ogden Newspapers, Inc.
The school week beginning April 10 launches a full slate of guest speakers.
- On Monday, A. Bray Cary will speak to students at 10 a.m. in Room 205 Martin Hall. Cary is vice president of broadcasting and special projects for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). Cary is a Hinton, W.Va., native.
- Ed Rabel, former NBC correspondent and crisis communications consultant for Weber McGinn, will talk about his career and journalism ethics at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in Room 2118 (Pathology Amphitheater) at Health Sciences Center North. Rabel is a St. Albans, W.Va., native.
- Patrick Gallagher, president of Charles Ryan Associates, is the featured speaker on Wednesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in Room 458, Business and Economics Building,
- Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Carol Guzy of The Washington Post will present”Bearing Witness”a slide presentation of her work, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in Room 205 Martin Hall. Guzy’s presentation will also be open to high school competitors participating in the school’s annual statewide two-day High School Journalism Competition, slated for Thursday and Friday.
All Journalism Week events are free and open to the public.
